How to Build a Cinder Block Kitchen Island?

You can easily DIY a cinder block kitchen in your outdoor area. Here are some simple steps you need to follow -

Create a Plan

This should always be the first step - creating a plan. This is because when building an outdoor cinder block kitchen, it is important to ensure all dimensions are correct, as even a minor mistake is difficult to rectify.

So, it is advised to check the plan thoroughly before executing. But if you are not a seasoned DIYer, hire a mason to help you create the plan.

Prep the Site Properly

Next, you need to prepare the site where you’ll build the island. As you pour the footing, it is crucial to coordinate the plan for any utilities you may need. This is because if you pour the footing beforehand, you might not be able to adjust the utilities.

Lay the Cinder Blocks

It is very important to get the first layer of cinder block correct, as it will serve as the foundation of the island. Hence, the measurement and placement should be exact. To lay the first layer of blocks, spread fresh mortar over the surface as outlined, then start placing the blocks.

Once the first layer is done, stack the blocks from there. Also, ensure to mortar in between layers; it may seem time-consuming, but it creates a near-unbreakable bond that makes the island strong and sturdy. Once all the blocks are laid, allow the mortar to cure.

Apply Masonry Scratch Coat

Once the masonry is cured, it’s time to prepare the exterior for the finish. Before you start layering bricks or stone, apply a masonry scratch coat to allow the finish to adhere to the exterior of the island. But before applying the mortar, consider attaching fiberglass lath or metal to the entire exterior to create a surface for the mortar to grip on.

Prepare the Countertop Surface

If you have a small surface, you may not need to prepare it. However, for a larger island, use a sturdy backer board for added support.

Place or Make the Countertop

For the countertop, here’s the step you need to follow -

• Attach the mold directly to the prepared surface.

• Pour the concrete into the mold to create a concrete slab, then leave it to cure.

• Remove the mold once the concrete slab is completely cured and dry.

Install Appliances

Now it’s time to slide the appliances into their designated spaces, as per the plan. However, if the opening seems small, you can cut it to size and then install the appliance. But if the openings are large, that's problematic. If you have some leftover material, you can apply some to minimize the gap.
